There's no xDrive badge on e53 models, but all 2004+ have it, as far as I know. It's available as soon as you turn on the ignition.

As far as DSC on an X5, from BMW USA:

Activated at the push of a button, Dynamic Stability Controls traction mode (DTC) increases tolerance for wheel slip and also facilitates initial acceleration on loose surfaces such as sand, gravel or snow.

Pretty odd to have an '04 with no xDrive - as already stated, xDrive is fitted to all e53 X5s from build date Sept 2003 (so MY2004).

Which "face" (grill, headlights etc.) is yours? (Years shown are build years...)

The LCI (facelift) version at the bottom has xDrive.

There is no button to activate "4-wheel drive". All e53 X5s are full-time all-wheel drive. From 09/03, the xDrive system adds an automatically variable ratio drive to front/rear axles - previous versions where a fixed split/ratio, 32%/68% front/back.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) was also on all models and is on all the time, unless de-activated via the DSC console button.

Thanks for reply and this is the case on mine, fronts are well worn....so in essence this is like running front and rears with differing treads, ok so tire characteristics as they are same brand model will be the same but the tread traction provided by front's is way different I guess.

How many threads do you have on this?
You rolled the dice and were lucky enough to get a warning from the xdrive transfer case so maybe learn from that and buy 2 more matching tires.

final update from my personal experience and my post DONT DO WHAT I DID
as soon as i put a set of identical brand/tread and size of course in my case all was good shudder gone on inclines and to be frank i was even getting it at low revs when slowing at traffic. Slightly kicking myself for not measuring the rolling circ. so be interesting to see what other xdrive owners have experienced if indeed they have gone down route I did.

Posts I read elsewhere said take tires to get em skimmed if there is a difference in tread depth/rolling circum...but out here they dont have such a service.

I think lesson learnt my end....will try to get proper balancing alignment done so i dont 'eat' the fronts and necessitate early swap outs...

that is definitely NOT true.

you guaranteed have all wheel drive, all the time. the DSC button turns OFF the Dynamic Styability Control, but still leaves you in all wheel drive, all the time.

OK, since we are updating this old(ish) thread, I might as well also suggest....

I think the interactive system was name "iDrive" - very close to "xDrive".

Then what is the XDrive emblem on the the newer cars referring to ?

Haha I suppose putting the Xdrive label only on cars that had idrive was so that people wouldn't get confused !
