Every car besides BMW that I've worked on has a key no workie dash icon for immobilizer issue. There's no sound logic for a legit owner with an EWS problem not to be obviously alerted to the actual problem.
I've seen you ask this multiple times very recently when really it's quite simple - the starter circuit is independent of the DME. The starter signal wire goes to the EWS, then straight to the starter.
If the key/EWS sync is faulty then the EWS does not let the signal travel to the starter.
If the key is synced properly to EWS, the signal travels through the EWS to the starter and the starter engages.
The EWS also needs to be synced to the DME - if the DME and EWS are not synced, the DME disables the fuel pump and ignition.

BMW has been doing this for years before any other makes had "key no workie dash icons" as you say. It has not been an issue, diagnostically speaking, since EWS's inception - technicians, and most DIY'ers, understand this simple principle. Crank, no start, with no voltage at fuel pump, is an EWS-DME sync issue. This is why when you don't have fuel during a crank no-start condition, one should check for voltage at the fuel pump harness before replacing the fuel pump...

The E53 was one of the last models to use EWS, BMW switched to a more complicated CAS system in successive models.

The mentioned code indicates that*the synchronization between the EWS and engine control computer is not correct. This will result that the car is cranking over as as the EWS itself is seeing a valid key but prevent the car from starting as the ignition and fuel system are disabled.Jun 4, 2023
...have you tried syncing the DME and EWS? Takes all of 1 minute to do this in INPA.

I don't have INPA...going to ask the neighborhood shop owner to allow me to use one of his “Launch“ scanners ...see what happens!

You might be able to do this with a Foxwell NT510. I only had BMW Scanner/PA Soft when my DME and EWS got de-synchronized due to low voltage, and PA soft would definitely not resynchronize them.

I found this thread awhile back, when I thought my EWS had lost sync (it hadn't, my battery voltage was just too low). https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ml#post1177584

If it worked using a Foxwell NT530, then it might work on NT510 or NT520 units as well.

Cool, I have an NT520 Pro. I'll go through the menu and see if it's available.

That's a common fix for dealing with loss of any. They often sell as a kit on eBay for that reason. Pre-matched. Key(and cylinder)-ews-dme matched set.
