Mine also fold and unfold. Like the look of the "M" covers for the E70, so bought some on AliExpress cheap for 17 usd. Will try to adapt them.
Meanwhile I received today the used E70 inner tail light to see it's compatibility. The size is exactly the same but the one I received is in extremely bad condition. Badly corroded bulb holders, broken wires, so needs a lot of work and needs parting the lens to get it perfect, but if seller does not accept responsibility and refund me at least 50%,I will be returning it.
Will fit to car before hand, to see if it looks fine and goes with outside light. Watch this space

Is your goal to have it illuminated for brakeing and park lamps?

You do realize that the photo I posted is not the final product and is only the lens cover, just to see if it fits?
Now, why would I even think of fitting something to risk that or to fit it incorrectly, after all the more difficult mods I made to my car in 20 years and still never a problem?
Actually, it's well known, this inner light on the non Lci E70 is prone to let water in, due to badly design sealant. This one is from an Lci, so already has the upgraded with a gasket. Practically impossible for any water to get through! Furthermore, water would then have to travel a hell of a long way through the harness into the battery compartment!
Nope, if water hasn't got in in 20+ years, it's not going to get in now. Hehe
Tbh, I may not fit them at all. Don't like the way it goes together with the outer light! I was just curious if it fitted. It does, but needs some work.
Still think it would look better than some E70 guys who fitted the Lci inner light to a non Lci outer!

The goal would be to transfer the wiring from the E53 reverse light to the top light bar, then bring a wire from the side lights/parking, to illuminate the leds on the light bars.
Either way, if I decide not to fit the E70 light, I may still look into the possibility of fitting extra wiring /bulbs to illuminate the E53s inner light for side /brake light....

Wow. Make a simple observation and get a dissertation.
