lower steering columbe play

Hi
Just thinking of changing lower steering knuckle and found another problem.
The shaft that comes from the steering wheel has lots of play.
If i move it up and down it sounds like metal on metal.
I can see a large long rubber bush and a green ring on the engine side.
What holds the shaft central of the tube that gous through the bulkhead.
I have looked at a parts diagram and it does not show any thing.

Thank you.

Daveking

Just posted a clip of the problem.
The green ring just sits on the cup.
It don't seem like its a bearing of sorts

Would i be right thinking that the lower linkage holds it central.
Also the is no play in steering wheel,up/down,left or right.

Thank you

not sure where you posted the clip , the green rings are kind of bearings there's two inner rings running in the outer green ring and yes the middle part is only held in by the two green rings. I replaced these rings along with the lower section which is connected to the steering rack as I had slight play and a faint knock.

wmv clip

I have uploaded the clip twice.Don't know why its
not there.

If i pull the linkage up and down the whole shaft moves along with
the rubber cup and green ring

Just been looking at a diagram.
So there is another green ring on the inside firewall.
How hard was it to change that one.

Thank you.

well its clear the lower joint is knackered but the movement in the section with the green rings in will move like that as its not supported other than the upper and lower sections , so will be difficult to judge how worn they are I did mine as a matter of course while replacing the lower section, the inner one isn't to bad to do long as you don't mind working upside down in the footwell

Just been looking around for the rings.
Not many stock it in the Uk,if they do its a arm and a leg.

Give main dealer a call tomorrow.

Thank you very much for your help.
