Minor Mystery- Noise Behind Dashboard

My x5 has been parked awhile, while I dragged my feet in repairing the window regulator. I finally got around to it last week, and have been driving it regularly since then- all operating well.

Yesterday morning I opened the door to be greeted by the sound of (seemingly) an electric motor whirring from somewhere behind the radio- and not the blower motor. This was occurring with no key in the ignition. Car started fine, and the sound continued throughout my 20 mile round trip, staying on when I shut the car off at my midpoint destination. No combination of control activation seemed to have any effect. When I returned home, the noise had ceased.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sounds like the air sampling fan.

There's a tiny grill on the left side of the control panel usually filled with lint. That's where the m cabin air is pulled in with a tiny fan to measure the temp of the cabin air.

I've heard the IHKA sampling fan on mine occasionally too but in a few cases (usually at shutdown) there is a whirring sound that is MUCH louder and it turns out to be the CD player turntable motor. No idea why the CD player would spin-up like this but occasionally it does. Stops after about 60 seconds.

If it is the IHKA internal fan, remove the unit, take it apart and clean the internals and fan of all the dust accumulated there. That fan runs all the time until the car goes to sleep mode.

Thank you for the responses! Will look into cleaning the dust from the sampling fan. Pretty confident it isn't the CD player. Thanks again!
