Emissions air pump?

Swapped out this emissions air pump...
X was sounding like a jet plane for the first minute or two after start up.
Pumps air into the m54 for quicker warm up if I remember correctly. Researched it little over a year ago...too many other gremlins came up in the meantime. Removed from a boneyard visit.

It pumps air into the exhaust, when the SAP is on the DME is adding extra fuel to create a very fuel rich mixture. This fuel rich mixture doesn't combust completely and in the exhaust it meets the fresh air from the SAP and burns again, causing the catalytic converters to get to operating temperature very quickly.

It can be deleted with no ill effects and still pass emissions in at least most states (CA and states following CA emissions I am unsure).

Great...sounds concise! I only knew partial that amount of info. No wonder I was not in a hurry to replace. Maybe this check engine light will disappear!
Thanks a heap!

I deleted it on the e36. There is a block off plate and gasket to purchase otherwise there'd be an open hole in the exhaust manifold. I never got a check engine light from it, which was weird. I wonder if the prior owner did something. I recently bought the DME swap from kassel performance that fully deletes it. This is installed but I haven't fired it up yet, still taking forever on the head gasket job. A few more days, hopefully it all works.

I want to delete it on e53 for sure just haven't gotten to it, trying to get rid of codes still.

You might have an exhaust leak,
