Not to tempt fate, but the AC on both of my aging X5s has been pretty reliable. When it's working, it works damned well, and the central TX climate is pretty brutal. Not @EODguy hot, but pretty hardcore.

I did have to replace the aux fan on the '02 back in 2022 at around 24K miles, and I've lately been concerned about the one in the '05 because it's so damned noisy. I should probably go ahead and replace it preemptively.

Owning two elderly X5s is quite an adventure.

Photo below is from a road trip to Las Vegas in May of last year in my '05 (black exterior, black interior ... basically a big heat magnet). About 3000 long miles total on that trip and both the car and AC did great.

The OEM compressor on mine reached 165k+ miles. The clutch burned up. A replacement AUX fan was installed shortly after I bought it. I didn't know much about its A/C set up. It was working great. Eventually, the pressure sensor failed. With hot weather here, I counted on engine cooling to run the AUX fan. Extra cycling probably burned up the clutch. A new switch was installed during a compressor install. Cooling is crazy fast now. As long as the AUX fan and switch work properly, the compressor should last a long time.

Have you considered changing the wheels? Some type to make it look "newer"?

Never have. I like 'em the way they are. I'm OK with looking old, since I'm pretty much an old geezer anyway. :-)

I'm old, too, and like the look of the original wheels (17" tires are OK, too, with REAL sidewalls on them).

Mine cools to 36-38F, probably because I added an electric 3000cfm aftermarket fan, and an inside the cabin, manual, fan speed controller (I can select full speed even when idling), and the brand-new TYC Auxiliary fan, as recommended by X5chemist, just last August.

I hope I'm not jinxing myself... I have to replace the fan resistor on my wife's '98 GMC almost every year...don't want to do the same on the X!
