Hi, I could use some help troubleshooting a DSC issue

Hi,

I have a 2001 X5 with a manual transmission. I've been slowly restoring it, but have hit an issue that has me stumped.

I was driving on a rough freeway near Memphis and the cruise control went off, the engine almost stalled then caught and I was able to finish driving home 1 1/2 hours with no other issues other than the speedometer no longer works.

When connected to the scanner, the DSC doesn't show up, the speedometer doesn't work, the economy gauge is not working, the odometer is not going up. The cruise control still works. I'm getting an intermittent check brake linings warning but I don't know that it's related. the only other DSC system issues are check self-leveling suspension which has been present when I got the car. When I bought it, there were no front brake calipers installed so I may not have the system bled properly.

I'm open to any troubleshooting advice. I can turn a wrench, but I'm horrible with diagnosing.

Thanks,

Mark

Sounds like you maybe lost a wheel speed sensor signal?? The wheel signal for the speedo goes through the ABS module so there is that.

Left rear i believe is the wss used for speedo.

Often the problem as mentioned above is in the abs module but the best case scenario is bad wss or the connector to it.

I would get abs errors if i went through a big enough puddle. (so was for sure the connector).

I'll certainly check it in the morning, but I would think I would still see the DSC and would likely get a code for the damaged sensor.

You'll be surprised how often you don't get a code or hope often a code unrelated to the actual defect
