AWR-fix: OFHG repair w/o intake removal

AWR-Fix: OFHG without intake removal
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink/top...ink_source=app

I posted at E70 but i think all inline six have the same moronic design where one screw is impossible to get out with the intake on the car.

I didn't do the hack the first time on n55 due to concern of the boost pressure.

I had a spare (blown) motor so I did a test and that went well so i re-did on the replacement motor.

I had to move the OFH from old to new motor anyhow: i think the accident that killed the host car also broke the OFH and they swapped on a model with no oil cooler.

A little bit of JB Kwik over the seam and it's good to go I wish I'd have done the trick on my e53.

M54 is the same. Remove the alternator and power steering fluid reservoir to reach it. No leaks on mine since doing a replacement.

I think all the L6 gas motors have the interfering intake manifold.

I'm happy that wife's car has the fix so i can actually just treat the OFHG as a simple afternoon preventive maintenance job. I'll be making the same modification to my car soon. The new to me engine had only one oil stain from the exhaust CPS seal. I plan to keep on top of any/all oil leaks and address them immediately.

I changed all the cam/vanos. I didn't change the valve cover gasket. I'm planning on changing the whole VC in spring my new ish one has the classic oil in the vacuum failure so i plan on exchanging that at FCP and put the new one on.

I didn't change the OFHG either and will do that at the same time.

I know I struggled to get it out. I was cussing like "EODguy" on bad day. Hopefully, the gasket will hold out as long as I own the X5.

as much grief as they give out the MTBF is reasonably long. My m54 lasted to maybe 150-160,000 miles and n55 even more.

That said, seems wife's n55 blew the gasket out and may have been the cause of her engine failure.

(Sudden loss of oil pressure at the oil cooler led to starvation and spun rod bearing).
