Yeah, this is another reason, I recommend folks don't own or buy a new BMW unless they own it during the factory warranty.

Looks more like click bait. BMW has probably applied for that patent but more of a design point of view. And even if that was was at some point used, how long do you think it takes tool manufacturers to make bits for that shape. Won't be a real problem but the author of course wants to lead that way.

The bigger problem is the encrypted coding. $350 from dealer to turn on your $800 taillight. That's criminal. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

![]() Pretty sure a standard "U" security bit would fit that crazy BMW screw. Might need a tiny bit of filing but i think the screw is adorable and i have to deal with plenty of crazy screws what's one more. (pentalobe being a perfect example). Locking us out of changing a light bulb is a far more egregious sin! –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

Figure if your new BMW has these, by the time you need to remove them someone in China will have a clone of the $375 BMW tool on ebay for $10.

I've bought enough specialized tools for for my X at this point, what's a couple more? Not planning on buying a new BMW. so I probably never have the need.

If these ever became a real fastener on a vehicle I worked on, I don't think it would be a deal-breaker. I mean, I forked out for the Kommen E53 sub-frame tool - what's a couple of sockets in comparison!
![]() ![]() (BTW, I've used this Kommen tool precisely once (well, four times...), as pretty much any E53 owner would only ever do. But it's SO nice I can't bring myself to sell it! )
