Original oil from the factory is Dexron III-H which can be replaced by newer Dexron VI. What I've used during the years is Petro-Canada AFT D3M.

DEX VI replaced DEX III. I use DEX VI in mine. No issues. It runs and shifts great. 177k+ miles.

There's not much to visually tell the 5-speed (M57/GM 5L50-E) and 6-speed (M57TU/ZF 6HP26Z) versions apart, unless you know what to look for: -
  • Slightly different engine acoustic cover design
  • Different fuel filter location

M57

M57TU

Nice! The engine bay looks so much cleaner. No stuff mounted on the wheel wells.

Someday, I hope to see a diesel X5 running.

X5s gathering needed!
