If you first remove the strut assembly from the car, it's not a big deal. Just don't throw the compressed spring (with compressors attached) around the workshop. And keep your fingers clear of the coils!

I can't imagine doing it without removing the strut from the car.

...but they can be used (where clearance allows) to pull down a (non-coilover) rear spring to facilitate removing it.
