Not trying to start a fight...

Due to excessive heat here (42c-48c) and the milage I have (heading towards 400k km) I am considering switching to 20w-50w synthetic.

I'd appreciate everyones thoughts on things like vanos problems, etc for running that viscosity. Take into account starting temps here though.

Thanks!

Maybe 15-20w and I can't see any issues with vanos etc as you're still in the range (starting viscosity), just a bit narrower.

I also don't see how going above 40w is going to help? Is your motor overheating? I don't think I'd go as thick as 50 myself.

20W-50, 5W-30, 0W-20... These viscosity grades are all available at the local auto parts store, but a 0W-20 is not a Zero Weight oil. The "W" in 0W-20 actually stands for Winter.

Because viscosity is the most important characteristic of any lubricant, understanding SAE grades is critical to optimizing engine performance and durability.

World renowned Tribologist and Certified Lubrication Specialist, Lake Speed Jr explains the SAE J300 viscosity grade classification system in this video.

Thanks!

Judging by the chart portion my lowest ambient temp is 17c for less than 60 days, my late spring is normally 32c-35c and the rest of the year stays 42c to 60c on devil's ass crack months. Mechanically I was only concerned about startup vanos issues, but the last month or so my startup coolant temp is 44c. On 53c+ days my coolant has spiked to 108c for up to 3 minutes in traffic 120kph when I have a sudden drop to 80kph normally 105c. It's time (August 1st) for my 90 day oil change (summertime schedule)

I can't explain why I have the sudden urge to go with a higher viscosity other than my old belief of temp reduction of viscosity and that my hopes that heat wise would keep the Witch's heart in better shape during "summer"

I'd say 15w-40 would probably be just fine.

15w40 would be fine but I think maybe hard to get in synthetic, especially in/out of the devil's ass crack. I mix synthetic and dino oil all time which maybe makes for more options. A wider viscosity spread means more additives to gum up which is also something to consider.

Yep 10w-40 is much more common.
