All the other X's have a different stock intake. For some reason the 4.6 has two additional units that runs to and from the stock intake. One is an air pump, a pipe runs into the top half of the box and sucks in filtered air. The other is some type of actuater gate that I think opens and closes under acceleration.
Take a look here of a pic broknlgs24 provided

This is the small actuater gate

This is the pipe the leads from the air pump to the top section of the stock 4.6 intake

I have a mini filter from BMC, i think its maybe 1/2 - 1 inch in diameter...will this work?

I'm gonna try a different route with my intake...and if i fail...i'll just get the AFE.

Anyone know how much room we have: from the HFM to the edge of the fender? The intake i'm looking at is approx 8-9 inches long...and was worried it wont fit. I assume the inlet diameter is 3.5inches?

sorry for asking this, dont have my x5 yet...its on the transporter now on the way...

thanks
franklin
I have a K&N mini filter that looks like this:

Not sure the exact size but it fits perfect on the air pump hose. You can view more here. http://www.knfilters.com/vent.htm

sooo how do you guys like the AFE? Any problems? Does anyone have a reliable dyno plot showing any gains? What about the Gruppe M intake...anyone know how much it costs or has a link?

The Gruppe M intake is like 1200 bucks. You'll feel better donating that money to charity, as compared to giving it to Gruppe M.

I installed my AFE intake in May and noticed a smoother throttle, and felt like more power. MPG down because I drive it a little harder now. I am in the 3,000 mile per year club. My job doesn't allow me to drive it dailey. It would be hard to sell projects/improvements to people when I pull up in a BMW and they drive chevys and toyota's. So on the weekends I tend to have a heavy foot.

Hmm... after watching some vids and hearing the sound of the AFE, im regretting ordering a K&N airbox filter :P

Ah well, maybe I'll do it after I've done the high-priority maintenance.
