How do i know if I have air ride susp. in rear?

I don't know if I do. I talked to my service tech and he told me to bring it in. I also called another company out here to install the H&R springs and he told me $1093 for the spring kit, instal, and allignment. Does that sound to much? I think it does. Let me know please.

What year is your X? If I remember correctly, starting in '04, they all have rear air suspension.

All 2001 X5 4.4i came with rear air suspension standard. It automatically keeps the rear ride height stable if you load up the rear cargo area with heavy items.

So, you DON'T need springs, but H&R usually uses different shorter links to trick the rear air springs to lower it a bit. Another way to lower it is to use BMW DIS computer to adjust the baseline rear height.

Also, the H&R springs are on the harsh side, but does improve the X5 handling....however, Eibach springs are another alternative with less ride harshness.

Good luck.

what do you think is the proper cost for something like this. I have heard that the eibach springs are not as good as the H&R

You can do like I did - look under the spare tire. If you have a big round cylindrical object that looks like a cake holder, congratulations, you have rear air suspension. I didn't even know I had air suspension until someone told me what the object was for.

I've installed both Eibachs and H&R springs in several different cars; both brands worked as advertised.

Regards, Mike
