Has anyone tried using stronger struts for the rear glass to open automaticly

I tried this in my 350z with sucess. I was hoping to do the same for the X. Anyone tried this or know what strength would be needed to lift it autmoaticly once the release button is pushed. This really helps when your hands are full. Of course make sure that it won't hit anything(ie garage door) once released. After I did this on my 350z it was only alittle bit harder shuting but nothing one hand couldn't do. You can find everything needed to complete this at McMaster.com Thanks for any help, Rob

Very Interesting Idea!! If no one's done it, probably the strength could be figured from weight of OEM part and lift ratings. I think this would be a very slick & useful mod. Anyone?

Thanks, I'm gonna take a look at the OEM strut tomorrow in the daylight to see if they say something on them about the strength. Cost me about $35 to install on my 350z.

I'm willing to bet it has an ill effect on the the automatic locking system on the tail gate of the X5, at least for the 2004+ models.

mine is a 2000 so I'm not familiar with the 04+. But what would this have to do with the tailgate? You are talking about the lower gate where the plate is mounted? Not sure what problems it would cause? Let me know

MY04 and later model years have the soft-close feature where you just close the hatch slightly and the system takes care of the rest. Having the stronger struts might cause the hatch not being closed properly.

Yea, I can't see that working once the struts are upgraded. But seems like pre 04 models would benefit form this.

Yup, that is why I mentioned the 04+ wouldn't probably work but your pre-04 is worth a shot.

I think it would work fine on the 04+ models. When my hatch is down, but not locked, I still have to press on it a bit to get the soft-close to trigger and pull it in. Does yours not do this?
