Thanks for your suggestion. However, what I really concern is not the tyres being pierced, but being scratched which makes the tyres useless. You know, in China, it is very hard to find this size of tyres, especially in some small cities or small towns. That's why I am thinking of taking two spare tyres with me. Someone told me that I should change all four rims into 18"s, so that I can take one spare tyres instead of taking two. What do you guys think? The existing spare tyre can only run 80km/h, and not for long run.

As far as bumps, i feel that my non-sport 01 with 22's has a smoother ride than my dads sport 06 with 19's. There is definetly more cushion and more of a floatly ride on my truck. As far as potholes and damaging the rim i think if you know how to drive and go slow, you can steer clear of most big holes that will actually cause damage. The roads get fairly rough in minnesota during the spring time and we have never had any problems with any of our cars.

Personally, if road conditions are bad, I would get 18" or even 17" all around - And the 2 spares are a great idea if you are unsure of availability to get replacements. Sounds like you are looking for a tire that can handle rough conditions. More sidewall will help you avoid bent rims. Just remember to match your speed to road conditions. Sounds like where you plan to go, BMW Assist or AAA would have a difficult time finding you, if you needed help.

There are alot of remote areas here in Idaho. My dealer told me of one guy who got into trouble so far off the beaten track, the tow truck could not get to him. It took 2 days, acouple ATVs, 2 spare tires, a comealong, and alot of sweat to get him off the mountain. Cell phones kept it from being a 4-5 day recovery. He was charged BIG $ for that rescue.

AHhhh i think you should probably go with some 17's for that terrain....I wouldn't think of trying the 19's on there especially for such a long trip

I'm currently still on winter 18"s - Blizzak LM22's and there is DEFINETLY a huge comfort factor on these than the 20" Diamairs (sport suspension).

Lower profile stiffer sidewalls - IMO, bent wheels and flats are more common on 20"s. Bent wheels are dependant on what wheels they are *forged, design, etc* and also flats ------it's just the very nature of wider tires. They tend to pick up more junk off the roads or the front's pick it up, *kick* it back towards the rears and the rear is more common to getting nails, etc.

With that said, it's the small price to pay but I do enjoy driving with 20's on NYC roads.

Wow! Yeah, 17" rims with an aggressive (big grooves) tread tire. A light truck tire. I used to run Dunlop Radial Rovers on my Ford Broncos. Pretty quiet on the highway, but aggressive tread design for good traction in snow and mud. You are truely going 4-wheelin'!

Just a thought, you may want to practice changing a tire under good conditions. Also bring along a piece of wood to keep the jack from sinking into the mud or soft ground. Say a pc 2 x 8 x 12 or 2 x 10 x 12. And a folding shovel. If it's real muddy and/or soft, try to put some stones under the wood. The shovel will help you dig out room for the rocks and wood.

thanks for opinion! I am going to change with 17"s and put Dunlop AT20s on. I think it will be good for mud and highway.
