My thought on it is if BMW thought it would work, why wouldn't they have added a "auto drop" feature when the hatch released? Seems if it was that simple, they would have done it. IMO. I don't think they would miss a chance to charge you for another option

This weekend I'll take a closer look. My concern is getting the right strut to just barely lift the glass but not to strong that you'll need 3 to 4 people to pull it down, ha!

on a non-BMW note concerning these items,
i've been searching for something similar for
the tonneau cover on my toyota pickup. where
can i find something similar that ur talking about?
i've seen on some other trucks, people have used
Rancho struts to lift their hoods, but i can't find
them either.

Mcmaster.com has everything need to do this on any vehicle. They sell a variety of ends for different application. And a large aray of struts. The main things you need to know is the length of the strut for it to open and close. And the right strength. Then just use the correct fittings for the ends. Easy install! Hope this helps

So I've been searching for specs on the OEM struts, and can't seem to find them. Anyone know where that might be listed online? RealOEM doesn't go into that much detail afaik.... which doesn't bode well for finding this info out. I suppose the alternative would be to buy a half a dozen different rated struts of the right size, and try em all on, but I'd prefer to be a bit more targeted. Anyone know?
PS- McMaster is a pretty incredible index of products. Makes me think about a few mods in a new light. Thanks for that!

Yea I love McMaster. I can find anything for the car/truck to the house. As far as strength, It will be hit or miss. I looked at the strut on the X and it doesn't show anything on strength. I might have afew struts at work. I'm going to take a few measurements and maybe I will luck out with one thats close to the right length. Then I can at least get an idea as to what would work. Keep you guys posted.
