HELP PLEASE!! I am looking to buy....

a 2002 4.4 X5, it has 69k miles. I drove it today and it was strong as a bull!! Tried it in manual mode too....very impressive. All components worked pwr windows, air, sunroof, pdc etc. I know these cars had some issues early on, dont know if the kinks were worked out by the 2002 year or not. Can anyone tell what I should be looking for. I have a 740iL so I am not a BMW novice. We currently have a 2002 Lexus RX300 that has been ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS as regards mechanical issues. I have only replaced the brakes and tires outside of general maintanence. I am not up for buying "trouble" as my E38 although I love it, has given me a plenty!!!
Your candid input/response/suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Depends on the price and the maintenance record. Definitely check to see if the water pump has been replaced (60K seems to be the average time of death...) Good luck

Haven't seen your name. Are you new to the site? If so welcome.

1. See if you can find out the maintenance history on the vehicle from BMW. If it's been in the shop for just normal routine maintenance items (brake pads, rotors, oil changes, etc.) and not in the shop every other month for non-routine issues then that's a good sign.

2. Run a carfax. I have an active account for another week, so if you want to drop me a PM with the VIN I will be glad to run it for you and shoot you the results in email.

3. Consider having an independent mechanic give it a thorough inspection. Could save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Carfax and service history a must. Is there another BMW dealer nearby who can do a pre-purchase inspection? Check for repaired body damge, etc. Good luck.

I just bought my '02 4.4 non-sport, loving it so far, the engine sound is magnificent, and it can pull. Paid 29.9 with 49k miles on it. Interesting enough I also have an 01 RX300 and that has been nothing but a pleasure to own, plus the navigation is light years ahead of the BMW's.

Only issues with the 4.4 is rear passenger door lock is messed up, instrument cluster pixels going out (BMWNA goodwill is fixing), and it's a gas hog.
