Nitrous And 4.4 X5's??
Yea yea, some of you probably don't recommend it. I am a bit of a nitrous junky (another one of my cars for sale in this add...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ALCA%3AUS%3A31 ) Well I have some extra nitrous parts laying around and wouldn't mind spraying it a little. Is there any experience on this board with 4.4+nitrous? Thanks!

I have never done it on a x5, but you should be able to do it no problem, just keep it under 100.
Easiest way would be a dry kit, the nos 75 shot. The wet kit would require you tapping into the fuel rail. If you get an obd ii reader that would make things all the better. I would also go with colder plugs. I am not sure what the next step down in colder plugs would be for the bmw. You could also put in an exhaust temp gauge to shut you down if you go to lean. For looks you could run two purge lines, each shooting out the top girlls.

You will have no problems with a 75 shot.
Nitrous has been around for a long time and is rather safe when properly setup and monitored. I went throught countless bottles in my Vettes. I have only used a wet system though. I believe the dry sprays right before the maf. A 75 shot on the X5 is easy. I doubt the injectors would even be at 100% duty cycle. You would be around 390 hp I would just use an obd ii reader and check the o2 trims and knock retard. If you are not going lean then you could even try a 100 shot You could even add some octane to slow things down a lil. I just used toulene. there are also a ton of "safety" switchs to help prevent you from going KABOOM! The best two, imo are the exhaust temp cutoff and the wot switch. You could hookup a dry kit in just a couple hours.

As you can tell, I don't think anyone really has tried nitrous on their X5. I would start out with a ZEX 55 shot dry kit or a Venom kit just because they are throttle based systems. Given the valvetronic design in the X5 4.4 2004+, I think it would be the safe route. And if 55 isn't enough all you would have to do is switch the pill size in the jet. Plus part is, the X5 can store a lot of nitrous tanks

Nitrous is not a problem on a single Vanos BMW 4.4i engine provided the normal precautions are taken. There's a couple of documented installs in the Roadfly E39 forum (http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39/). Do a search on Nitrous Oxide and you'll find "JimLev" who has a 75 shot wet system on a '00 540i 6-speed. Looking at his posts, his install dates back to '02 or '03, so he's gotten some longevity out of it. He started out with a single dry 50 shot, went to a dual action 50/50 shot, then converted to a wet progressive system. Here's a picture of his install:
I've run N2O on Supra MK4. It was fun while it lasted, it was just too much to worry about, especially when other people were driving my car. I blew the engine, probably hastened somewhat by the N20, but it was tracked heavily, so it was inevitable. I would not install a NOS system on a high mileage 4.4 engine. And you might want to kill the rev-limiter. But heck yeah, it's doable. I didn't think it was practical until I read of Jim's experiences. |
