Yes, there is a setting to disable it, but you can get someone witht the DIS computer to re-enable it. Yes, it is a software setting and yes it can be re-enabled. I have had some custom DIS settings done at the dealer if you know the right person (also at no cost) .
I have "demanded" it 3 times now to no avail. I gave up finally.

So add the up & in to your settings. Just set the wheel to this position and memorize it. That's what I did.

If I understand it correctly. the seat memory switches are for your personal position(mirror, seat steering..). Once the key be removed, the steering should retract to the home or initial position so the driver can get in & out easy.

But they disabled that a few years ago because it cost too much to replace the motors that kept burning out. The option is no longer available and, if you need a reprogramming for any reason, you lose it. I had Memory Module problems just after purchase and the reprogramming eliminated the automatic wheel retract. I asked the dealer to put it back and he told me BMW NA would not allow it. Hence I put the next best thing into my seat memory program. I control that not BMW NA!

So you were saying program the retract position into one of the seat memory button and hit it everytime when you get out of the Vehicle

You got it. I have it as part of my key/seat memory. Typical of the high handed attitude BMW NA exibits to "remove" an option from my vehicle AFTER I buy it! If they have a problem they should redesign the part and stop putting such cheap, chintzy parts into their vehicles. How would they like it if we were to sue for $5,000 each back for the option they sold us and removed at a later date without permission.

My 04 X5 didn't telescope, it only went up. When programming, the dealer said they could not do both. My 06 X5 does both.
