Engine oil too much?

These may be silly questions. I do need your advice.
I bought my X5 4.4i (yr 2000) 1 month ago in HK and had the engine oil changed 2 weeks ago. The garage engineer recommended me to use a SAE 5W-40 synthetic type(probably not Castrol), 8 litres were used and that is recommended by the owner manual.
The engine runs fine. But one day when I took out the engine oil stick, 5 minutes after stopping the engine (did it several times to confirm), the oil mark is slightly higher than the "max" mark, (about 5-7mm higher).
Does this indicate too much engine oil has been added? would it damage the engine ? Shall I immediately change the engine oil to the "correct" amount of
Castrol SAE 0W-40 oil?

Too much oil can certainly damage your engine. One indication is white smoke from your exhaust. If you have an oil extractor, I would probably take a little bit out to be on the safe side.

Littlefrog, engine oil levels need to be checked when the engine is cold. Only transmission fluid levels (not the X5 of course because there is no dipstick) should be checked warm. If you still have the problem cold I would do as our friend Madkim suggests.
