Here are the difference.. Can you make sense out of it?

The motor mounts between the 550 and 545 are identical. Unless bolt hole pattern in the x5 4.8 block is different than the e60 v8 engines (which i doubt), you should be good to go.

I def think you have a better shot of this with your e60.

I see - we're talking salvage revival. That's a nasty hit on the 545i. Is the X5 in the same condition?

Dropping it into an '01 X5 has got to be as difficult a task, if not more.

It's not salvage.

The X5 I am about to buy is perfect.

I think pre 04 X5 would be harder to do than your 545. and since you alread tried that i wouldnt try the X5 pre 04. That bing said i think you rbest bet would be to use a 2004 x5 and use the 4.8 engine. But honestly maybe your shop isnt that good. Because i see no reason why the 4.8 wont work in the 545. From the outside its the same engine. All changes are internal. Its just a bored and stroked 4.4 with more agressive cams. Once that motor is stripped it should bolt right in. Then you can coneect all the 550 exhaust emissions and cpu parts. It really should not be hard at all if you got the right parts. Youshould find a shop that specializes in engine swaps. I think someone on here has recomended one before. Hopefully he sees this thread and gives his input. But ook online for BMW engine swap specialists. There out there. or buy a BIMMER magazine and look in the back.

Did you look at the pictures of the 545i? Head on collision, engine block pushed back into the firewall, windshield shattered from the base. We're talking salvage work here. Getting the car to run is one thing - getting it to run RIGHT is another.

As I think about this more, I don't this is worth it. You have extensive damage with your 545, and you might have issues with engine/transmission compatibility issues. You have a 4.8 engine but you can most certainly not use a 4.8 transmission. You're going to need a 550 transmission and tcu.

If any parts are different between the engine and the 550, you'd have to use the ecu from the 4.8, but I highly doubt a 4.8 ecu will be able to correctly communicate with a 550 tcu; gear changes and engine response are highly integrated. There's also the issue with the engine controling all the traction systems and idrive.

If it's just a calibration difference between the 4.8 and 550 engines, you can just use the 550 ecu.

Here we go again!!!....

OK now. I have a different question. Will the 4.8 BMW X5 engine drop into the 2004 Range Rover? What else would need to adapt the BMW engine into the '04 Rangie which has a BMW engine?
