is this thing underneath under some kind of trap door? I read all DIY articles and they are not specific to my 4.8. thanks chucker

Underneath

Powers, you must have a 4.4, a 4.8 is underneath near the oil plug. chucker

Oops!Sorry!I was just trying to be helpful and sourced that link for you, since no one else answered.I didnt noticed that they were talking about a another Bmw!

I have a 3.0D and my oil filter is down on the left side of the engine. The 4.8 has it as you said by the oil plug.

You must be referring to a 4.4 w/o Valvetronic!
According to the following article ,the oil filter is also underneath!!!!

then i am confused on the 4.4

my local bmw mechanic showed me on a 4.4 in the bay when he was working on a 4.4 where the filter was, then I said mine is a 4.8.. he then said yea yours is a m62? engine and its underneath. he may have been working on a 4.4 without valvetronic, when we was attempting to show me that is was up top. chucker

Man, I wish I saw this post yesterday. I could not find my filter on my 4.4. I ended up removing the steel plate under the engine. I figured that the filter was behind that since I couldn't see it from below. After removing both wheels, to get to the shield nuts, and still not seeing the filter. I swore that I would NEVER do an oil change again. Until I finally saw that the damn filter is behind the driver headlight in plan sight. A 20minute job turned into an hour and a half. Anyways life and learn, Rob

It's too bad BMW is putting the filter below the car now. I really like the filter right out in front under the hood.
