soft close rear hatch retrofit?

Is there such a thing? If so, it would cure alot of complaints we early model owners have voiced. Chime in if anyone knows anything about this. I, for one, would love to do it on my '01. I love it on my '06.

Won't work for any pre 10/03 models .... except if you'd be willing to buy a new rear upper door. I have the soft close lock and looked into retrofitting it on my X5 without any luck as the lock does not even fit into the trunk lid....
The electric part is easy and not much work but the fitting issues with the new lock (it is larger than the original non-soft close lock) will make this mod somewhat unviable ....

yea, i asked that question to my service guy he did some research and he told me the same thing. he said even tho it looks the same its just the mechanism (lock) is much larger in the new models therefore it can not be retrofitted into the older ones you would have to buy an new rear upper hatch door.

Thanx for the info- guess I'll have to drive to New York City and have some building part or paint can fall on the rear hatch so I can file an insurance claim.
