I just wanted to post that after looking quite a while, my wife finally found an X5 she liked. I really appreciate the information I was able to find on this site about the potential problem areas specific to the X5. We (her car, my payment) ended up with a 2001 with 88k on it that was incredibly clean (perfect inside and out). It was owned by a VP for a major bank that commuted from Santa Cruz, CA to the south bay. It had the book stamped with all the repairs by the dealer and then local independent so I was confident the services were performed.

Options included Premium Pack, Sports Pack, Cold Weather Pack, Climate Package, DSP, and Zenon. We walked out for $21k which was slightly higher than I wanted to spend for that mileage but was worth it as the car was tight and drove far better than the other 10+ 2001's I have driven.
