Unhappy *HUGE* mistake re: x5 laptime ... apologies :(

hey everyone-

it looks like in my excitement/giddiness at the Thunderhill the other day I made a gross timing error:

When I told you I had clocked a 2:24 in the X5 -- a mere 3 seconds off my Mustang's pace from 2 yrs ago -- I had literally misread and thus misspoken:

in fact the laptime was a positively dismal 2:34 ... a whopping THIRTEEN seconds slower than the Mustang

i discovered this error while capturing/compressing the video footage to post online.

again, my apologies for this disappointing timing error; nonetheless i'm sure you'll still enjoy the video which will be up shortly.

go out and get an instructor next time. Obviously, your line is probably messed up and you are doing something wrong. 2:24 even is really really slow... With laptimes like that, your time is not your biggest concern... your driving and your line should be.

In comparison on R compound on my desnorkled, ROW030 and techart exhaust boxster S I ran pretty consistent 2.10's and I was still really middle of the pack. Maybe Hayaku will take you on as his protege and teach you the ways like a young grasshopper.

well yes: first of all, it was the first lap of the day, my second time at thunderhill, with my first time having been more than 2 yrs ago

secondly, i *NEVER* go as fast/hard as i can go due to lack of rollover protection. even so, of course there is much to learn.

i can't wait to get out there again, although next time it will of course only be with the porsche or the mustang.

Where is Thunderhill? - Would love to find somewhere to 'air out' my '01 in a more legal enviornment - re: rollover protection, I still say a 2dr X5 would allow a rollbar and 4pt harness, and give us big guys alittle more room to get in & out, and allow me to join the 150 club at Bonneville Salt Flats.

it's in Willows near Sacramento..

Honest opinion and not to be harsh, you had not much of a line and you were braking really really early. You need to use the track.. and the whole track.. and the faster you straigthen out, earlier you can get on the power of which you didn't do. Next time, really.. ask for an instructor or go with a group that provides instructors.. they will walk you through the track and teach you the line and also give you feedback and what you are doing right or wrong.

sanguru-

i totally appreciate your suggestions and i'm pleased to tell you that i definitely started driving more like you suggest as the day progressed. again, it was my first lap out of the day after no track events for two years, i was definitely not warmed up yet. The rest of the day was spent behind the wheel of the C4S and I was definitely using more and more of the track as the day progressed. Even so, I NEED to restrain myself quite a bit as (a) no rollover protection; (b) Dad's car (the C4S anyway); and (c) $60K car at that ... however, in a couple years I might put rollover protection in my Mustang, add a turbo or blower to it's whimpy 3.8L V6 engine, and *THEN* i'll not have ANY qualms about pushing it to 10/10

P.S. once i finish the rest of the DVD i'm making, i will post some of my better laps in the porsche, and you can let me know what you think there it's a rear-chase cam from a tricked out Subaru WRX STi.
