Question tailgate lights

when and if the lights on the tail gate light up or are they for decoration? I have never seen them turn on on my 2004 or 2006 X5.

You can wire them to function, but on US spec X5's they are indeed just for decoration.

Search the forums for "rear fogs". Several members have done this mod.

Question

whats even worse, i heard they didn't even bother wiring or putting light bulb holders there. I thought they would turn on at night or w/ the adaptive brake force etc. turn on.

Question

exactly, when you buy a BMW you expect that everyhting will work; but i guess it depends on if it goes to europe & etc. or america. I t always feels like the american version is just missing unique items that the other countries get.

Rear fog lights in the tailgate

Hi there, as mentioned above the rear fogs are not mandated in the USA so unfortunately a very good safety feature is missing from our cars.Because I am going to export my X5 home with me to the UK I set about the project of retro fitting the fog lights.see this article;
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/l...s-2005-x5.html

It was quite invloved but worth the effort and anyway for me it is law in the UK so I did not have a choice.If I had left it for a garage to do the conversion work to make the X road legal in the UK they would have just put a generic switch somewhere on the dash,They would not have integrated it into the BMW system.
