Bedding pads really does not apply if the rotors are not turned or replaced. Slamming on the brakes a couple dozen times in not going to wear off enough pad to have the entire rotor surface in contact with the entire pad surface. This is the problem in this case. The older rotors have a very uneven surface that will cause irregular contact areas on the rotor. Bedding can even warp the rotors, by slamming on the brake repeatedly the rotors will heat up quickly and unevenly due to the uneven rotor surface.

It’s always recommended to replace rotor each time you replace the pads.

Bedding is required on old rotors if you change pad material. The transfer layer has to be re-established with the new pad material.

Not if you follow the procedure. The procedure calls for progressive heating of the brakes in a controlled manner.

I look at it this way say the pad is 15mm thick (NEW) and you can get 30K out of a set of pads your talking about 2ooo miles of driving to wear 1mm of pad. Used rotors have at least 1mm in grooving. Thats why I think bedding will not solve this particular situation. Whatever process you use, bedding will not use up that much pad.

I hear what you are saying. From the StopTech FAQ #6 found here
"Consequently, when installing new pads on a used rotor, there is a small window of time in which the new pads will rapidly wear down against the peaks and valleys of the existing rotor face. This process of re-establishing the wear interface is often referred to as burnishing"

"performing a bed-in procedure will serve to establish the wear interface as well as to expose the pads to their green fade in a controlled environment. For this reason, we recommend performing a formal bed-in any time rotors, pads, or both are changed, regardless of pad compound or rotor manufacturer."
