Runflats versus normal tyres

Hi guys. I understand much of the debate regarding runflat tyres. However, what I was wondering if anyone here has ever replaced their runflats with standard tyres. I would be interested to know if standard tyres on an X5 give an improved ride and better handling than the firmer side-walled runflats. I have sports suspension and I was thinking that standard tyres might help take some off the stiffness out of the ride. Cheers.

Hmm, interesting. I wasn't aware any X5's were coming with runflats as standard tires. I know in the states they don't (non 4.8's). However to answer your question, yes the tires are slightly less stiff usually because runflats have a very low profile as opposed to most standard tires. Really the stiffness is more in the type and structure of the tire.

Never herd of X5's with run flats in Australia either? not on new X5's anyway.

I guess they must have been fitted by the dealer if its new, or the previous owner if it is second-hand.

Either way, everyone I have spoken to about run-flat's say that normal tires are noticeably softer than run-flat tires.

You have me thinking now. I'm pretty sure the dealer said they are run flats. I'll check the tyre designation on the sidewall.

Nope

Although crap tyres IMHO. To soft don't last anytime at all.

I've had 2 sets of Michelin Dimaris and 1 set of Pirelli Scorpion Asimmetricos -- all of them 19". The Dimaris look the best, but the Pirelli's lasted more than twice as long, and were nice handling/riding. They (the Pirelli's) did have a tendency to flat-spot after being parked for a while... I'm pretty sure my next set for the X5 will be Yokohama Advan ST's.

How long is "a while"? A couple of days, a week or just over night? Also do they tend to flat-spot in the summer or winter? The Pirellis are currently on my short list as my next set of tires as I need some all-seasons to replace these summer tires. Thanks.

Almost any performance tire will develop flat spots if the vehicle sits...

BTW, a while is usually a month or so without moving.
