WHICH gives Better GAS mileage ?

A 2001 X5 3.0

or

A 2004 X5 4.4 with Vanos ....

comments appreciated as I drive upwards of 50 miles a day, I need something that gets at least 20 MPG. The new ML350 gets less than 18 MPG and currently thinking about a Toyota 4Runner as well.

Thanks !

I have a 2001 3.0 and i average around 19-20 (With the rims off)
My dad has a 2006 4.4 and he averages 17. But it seems the 4.4 just sucks gas compared to my 3.0

They should be even. But the 4.4 is addictive and you will probably be on the throttle alot just to feel it and hear it like i do.

as it is understood, a 4.4 would get better gas mileage (as well as torque when needed) due to the fact that a 3.0 engine has to do more work to pull the same weight of the truck up hill as the 4.4 does. Lesser the work a 4.4 engine needs to perform = lesser the gas needed to be burned.
Also valvetronic engines, only uses the cylinders when needed....my 745li works like a 4 cyl. and sports like an 8 when i need it to, compared to my X.

I actually thought about that before purchasing my 01 X5 3.0, because I was aiming for 2004+, 4.4 as well. According to specs from most car magzines, it indicates that the newer model of 4.4L X5 got slightly better mileage than the 3.0Ls. However, logically it shouldn't, V8 4.4L vs. V6 3.0 inline6, its impossible to have better mileage with bigger engine and tire size to begin with. I would recommand you get the 3.0L, or else re-consider getting any SUVs at all, cuz they are just all gas guzzling things. But this is just what I think, you decide whats right for you

According to EPA ratings:

'01 X5 3.0: 15/21 MPG

'04 X5 4.4: 16/22 MPG

I wouldn't agree at all that simply because a motor is bigger it must use more fuel. That would be a correct statement IF the engines both shared the same fuel/air mechanics...which they don't. My 2004 4.4 with 18's on it got around 19mpg (even up to 20mpg when I tried). With my 20" wheels on it gets 17-17.5mpg....driving however I want.

So IMO, both the 3.0 anv 4.4 Van will give you about the same mpg and both require the same fuel and have the same size gas tank.....so if 17-19mpg doesn't sound good....don't get the X

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
I have the 2005 4.4 it gets around 20 on the highway at 70 to 75, it would get better mpg if I slowed down.

The 8 has a six speed trans that also helps it get better highway mpg.

The X5 is heavy and if you do a lot of city driving, mpg drops quick and is less than the 16 EPA number.

The 8 gets better highway mpg and is no worse than the 6 around the city.
To me its a simple choise more power with the same or better mpg, get the 8!

Tomorrow, I wish...When are you guys going to stop driving on the wrong side of the road?

I get an average of 18 city/highway. If you like to light up the V8, "actual mileage may vary".
