Rr Window Regulator

2000 x5, 4.4 70k

What is the difficulty of doing a window regulator? Dealer want like $500, not from me if I can help it, will probably seek a indy shop if I have too. Any special tools required or any good advice besides the link on how to that is on this web sight. Things i have done in the past on my volvo are brakes, tune ups, and other minor stuff. Just not sure about the toughness of the bmw window regulator.

I am a newbie on the site and the wifes warrenty is out so I am trying to cut the cost of the dealer if i can do it.

Not that difficult to do. The only real trick on the rears is if you have the sun shades. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

Im fairly new to x5world and just bought a mahogany red x5 i will post pictures later when my camera starts working. But as for the window regulator how much do the parts run to fix them your self....Thanks let me know

Have not had to do a window regulator yet (knock on wood) but I did just do one for a friends girlfriend... it was a gm and they are a b!tch to get out. So I just took the motor housing apart with the regulator still in the car and changed the brushes and the coil. Is this possible on the X's. Was a 10 minute job instead of the 3 hours I thought it was gonna take. The brainiacs at GM decided to rivet the regulator in so it would have been a nightmare to change it.

The window regulator and motor can only be removed as one unit. Once out then you separate the motor from the regulator, transfer the motor over to the new regulator, and then reinstall both units into the door assembly.

I've never seen or heard of a window motor failing, but the window regulator itself is a common problem.

I did change rear passenger side reg for 2001 330i, two more doors coming. Make sure you disconnect your battery assuming you have a airbag at the door you are fixing. It took me 2 hours but next time it should take me less than 30 min.. I don't know how different with X5 but the main factor would be overcoming the fear of messing up a expansive car and getting your hands messy. Fortunately my X5 is still under warranty.

ahhh....the famous window regulator failure conspiracy that bmw has so much in stock of for some reason =x best thing i did for my self was do it my self! the dealer wanted 300 bucks for a regulator, and 2 hrs of labor....just get the regulator on ebay its about $80.00, and i installed it in under 30 minutes. ( make sure to plug in the harnesses correctly before you wonder what happens and you have to go on a forum and wait for advice, and not have your door locks, power window or park assist mirror not work for two days until i realized what the problem was!%^&$% ) ....but other than that it came out greattt!

For the front doors I was able to replace the window regulator without completely removing the airbag. I just unbolted it and moved it out of the way while keeping it plugged into the wiring harness. I don't have rear airbags, so I don't know if they need to be removed or not.

no airbag has to be completely removed...there is a diy on the homepage abt replacing regulators.
