Left Foot Accelerator for X5 Question
My fiancee is an an amputee, right leg, below the knee. We're going to be ordering a new X5 and will need a left foot accelerator installed. I'm unsure if there are going to be any issues on this.
Also if someone has any about supplier and installer experiences to relate that might make the process easier. TIA |

Not sure about the left foot accelerator, what about hand controls? Either way, the dealer should be able to assist. Good Luck, keep us posted.

Should be an easy mod since it's drive by wire. Do you think the dead pedal might get in the way?
And welcome to the board!

A UK model has the pedal on the other side of the vehicle so it should be easy enought to shift it within one side.

Left to Right: Dead Pedal, Clutch (if applicable), Brake, Throttle at least in the few right hand drive cars i drove they were... just the shifter was on the left hand now (but still in the center) |

Yea the actual set up is the same but my point was they could move the pedal all the way over in the car so it should be possible to move it within one side.

Welcome to X5World Vinnie! I keyed "left foot accelerator" into Google and it returned lots - you may want to give that a try. I'd guess that you find many options. Best of luck and do let us know what solution you decide on. Oh, before I forget - we're pretty pic-hungry here too so we'll need to see pics of your solution and your new X5!

It just occured to me that it would be good to keep the original accelerator as well and have a switch to control which accelerator is giving input. That way someone else (you, a valet, etc) could drive the vehicle as well.

i've seen plenty of hand controls for brake and throttle as well... i would imagine that would be a better choice if you were to keep the car generic to other people also

The first thing I did was Google the phrase and got the usual embarassment of riches and thought that tapping the knowledge base here was a good step. I have an email out to a company in Oz who has modded a X5, in answer yet.
She is pretty well adapted to a left foot throttle and makes funny faces over hand controls. It's been a long time since the dyno room days with Thinwall Fords and the last serious wrenching I did was a small block Chev into a Toyota Land Cruiser. I know from Double Pumper Holleys and cables but thought there might be something about the throttle set up on X5's I had better find out about before I went down the road too far. The days of fabbing something up in the shop are done. Nowadays I want to buy a solution and say, "Cause it to be done.". There's also a logistical question in that I'm in SoCal and she's currently in Houston and the car will wind up there, Austin, actually and I'm still researching dealers down there to deliver it and am looking to get the whole package put together. I'm kind of a belt and suspenders guy who likes to have all the ducks in a row ahead of need. Last edited by barbareno; 06-07-2006 at 08:47 PM. |
