No it doesn't... The light goes on and the fan runs stronger but the actual compressor won't run... Go outside and see...

X5s seem to be very power hungrey. My 5 year old left portable DVD player pluged into back seat lighter and about 45 min later after return from shopping...batt was dead. My old Explorer would go days without draining the batt. O well, take the good with the bad. I just know next time to make sure everything is unplugged and off. O yea, same thing happened when I was Zainoing it as well!

The AC compressor does not run without the engine running. The AC fan will run but you won't get any cold air, but you will run down the battery

regarding the AC why doesnt it require time to make it cold in the bmw vs. other cars? I turn the car on and I get cold AC without having to wait or drive around.

The other cars Ive owned it took a few mins,

My battery died yesturday.....I dont understand why...I mean we had driven the car that morning etc then I take to the Gas station to fill up and its ticking etc but wont crank so after about 20mins of trying the battery gave up. Whats funny is I asked about 3 pple there and the answers I recieved were funny as hell... one guy said no no I dont knwo how to do it i was like ill do it...he goes no no im afraid of that its not safe..the second guy goes no man i iiiiiii (ithink he studdered trying to come up with an excuse) had a bad experience it i had an explosion when i did it ....WTF and the third was guess a police officer and he goes i dont know how to do it so i say just pop the hood and ill do the rest. he goes i dont have the cables ...i say well thats ok i do...then he goes ummmm well were not allowed to do such things man i was like WTF im payin ure f...ing salary m...f... and u cant help me...ass hole...i didnt say that to him but i realy should have he deserved it....any how finnaly a nice person helps me out ( yes i do have a roadside service but they said itll take up to an hour and half so i figured while their trying to get here ill try to get it started) we got the car started everything was fine i got home and made an appointment to go to the dealer...on the way the lights start flashing the tranny goes into failsafe mode.....the abs dsc all of those systems engage and disengage it was wacky ....i think what led to the downfall fo the batter was that the about 4 weeks ago i detailed the interior and had the radio onnn pretty loud too...but it gave in yesturday.

Incorrect. Perhaps you should check YOUR facts. Have you done a Pulley install? obviously not. AC compressor on bmw V8's (on my S62 E39 M5 also) are tied to the accessories belt and not driven off the crank or the alternator. On the accessories ON position, the fan runs (on the battery) and will turn which will in turn spin the ac commpressor if AC clutch is engaged until the battery dies.

SANgruru, unless I'm mistaken the AC compressor is driven off of the engine. I checked under the hood and the AC compressor appears connected to the serpentine belt? I'm not trying to argue, I just want to understand what is correct.
