Trailer towing?

I know some of you have towed trailers before but I never have and I'm helping my sis move from NYC to DC. So this weekend, i'm driving up and was planning to rent a trailer to hook up to the X. I was just on the U-haul site, they claim if I want to hook up a trailer, I have to purchase a wiring harness from BMW. I have the OEM hitch and thought this more like a plug and play thing.

Normally the wiring is part of the hitch package.

If you don't have it you probally do need to get BMW parts.

I have a factory hitch. most rental trailers use the rectangular/inline plug. your hitch has the round plug but you should have adapter that came with the hitch option.

Thanks 4 the replies, however I don't have an adapter. That's probably what I have to get from the stealer!

Check in the spare area it is a small black plug.

It is not exclusive to BMW used the same adaptor on my Volvo.

The round adapter is seen in the lower right corner of this shot, "borrowed" from Bavarian Autosport

You can buy that adapter at any auto parts store - it is not a BMW exclusive adapter. Main thing is that you have the wiring installed to plug it into.
