Picked up my new X5 today....

I picked up my new X5 today after work. It rained this evening, so I did not take any pictures yet, but here are the specs:

'06 X5 3.0
Jet Black
Truffle Brown Leather with Anthracite Maple Wood trim
6-speed Manual
Premium Package
Sports Package
Navagation
Xenon Headlights
Auto-Dimming Mirrors

The car is truely amazing. I love the way it drives. The 6-speed is going to take some getting used to as the only manual tranny cars I have owned in the past were sports cars. This manual has a longer throw and the clutch has more travel. The first gear is also very short. But I'm sure I will get used to it in a few days.

One thing I noticed is the attention to detail. For example, when you are driving at night, every single button & knob is lighted up in amber. Most cars just have the main controls lighted up. I even noticed that the door release handles have little tiny amber LEDs so that you can see them -- something that is great for passengers who normally fumble to open the door because they are not familiar with where the door release handle is.

And when you press the button above the rear-view mirror to turn on the interior lights, the whole car lights up. I counted 11 different interior lights that all light up by pressing that one button. These are the kinds of things that seem unimportant when you are shopping for a car, but will make the ownership experience very good.

I like how the controls are laid out. Everything seems to be where it belongs. I did not read the manual but I was able to figure out just about everything in about an hour.

I'll try to post some pics sometime over the next week or two.

Eric, congrats on your fab new car and many happy years with it. What made you go with the manual? As I understand it, you guys get auto as standard and manual is a no-cost option. We here in the UK get manual as stanard on the 3.0 and have to pay an extra $2700 for the auto. Most people would take the auto option as this isn't the sort of car you would hussle like a sports car.

Actually, the manual is standard and the Auto is a $1200 option. But most of the X5's here are auto. In fact, I could not even find a manual to test drive. But I enjoy driving manual much more. I get bored with auto. I wanted to get a SUV, but wanted something a bit sporty as well, so that's why I choose the X5. With the sports package and the manual, it's pretty fun to drive.

Congrats!

My reaction was the same as yours nine months ago. Also my first bimmer. This weekend is Full Moon - make sure you go out for a night drive outside of the city with the panoramic moonroof open It's awesome.

Am also enjoying my bluetooth and iPod features.

I stand corrected, but at least your auto option is a more realistic price. Your right about the sporty drive, I have been driving X5s for 3 years now and still marvell at it's ability to give a rewarding drive especially around the tight country lanes of the UK. I do have the auto and am happy with it, the only problem being that when used in the steptronic mode it can be slow to change gear. Not very often use this, but when I do, I would rather have the control of a manaul.Don

Congratulations and Welcome Eric !

The experience of a brand-new X5 is truly great. I got my new '06 on May 10th and I'm still craving for every ride; long or short.

And by the way, I agree 100% with you on the manual tranny; it fits the sporty character of the X5 perfectly, being a great example of a late-generation BMW manual gearbox. I test drove an auto X5 for a few days before getting my car, and I couldn't be happier about having chosen the manual.

Many happy Miles !

It's a great feeling. Good luck, you know what the best part is? The novelty does not wear off. I still look forward to every ride. ENJOY!
