how and what to use to clean engine bay?

I am planning on cleaning and detailing the engine bay. I don't know if any DIY guide out there. Any input would be appreciated.

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
You should be sure to clean the engine area only when the engine is cold.

I generally use the end of the car wash after cleaning the rest of the car.

When I am done I start the engine and let it run for a while so it dries out.

I generally get a nonabrasive cleaner like Simple Green and spray down the engine compartment and use a soft brush to wipe away loose dirt and grime. Lightly hose down the engine bay and then use your favorite rubber conditioner (Meguiar's, Armor All, etc.) to squirt down the hoses and black plastic covers. Then start the car and let the engine run for 5 minutes and it should look brand new. I have used this simple method for over 20 years and never had any problems.

Ljnlaw, not to cross you, but my experince is that rubber conditioners like Armorall and such, tends to cause premature cracking of the rubber. I would be very cautious when using it on rubber hoses.

use an air compressor to blow out excess water after cleaning. Try to stay with distilled water to clean the compartment, this will prevent discoloration in the engine bay

Check out X5Jay's recommendations here, and his engine bay pics in this thread.

Magnificent.

Thanks - I was going to point him in the same direction...

I also read through the very lengthy thread that someone else pointed out regarding using WD40. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're dealing with an old and very ugly engine that you're planning to sell that week. The Aerospace 303 is the way to go IMO - and not sprayed everywhere, just sparingly applied with a lightly dampened rag - that makes your engine bay really look factory-new and not all shiny and slimy... GL!

Cleaning engine

When I lived overseas many gas stations had steam cleaning service for the engine. It was basically a hose with a nozzle that released steam (with some pressure, not a lot) and left the engines like new, I am not sure if the steam was mixed with some cleaning product. It was like those steam cleaning things they sell on infomercials .

have never seen it in the US. Is this a service that was ever used here?
