STOLEN X5 follow up

It was a post here about X5 stolen in Eastern Europe recently. I have called an old school mate who was in this "Business", asking how it is done and how to prevent it:

There is a block (under passenger seat?) where all the codes and programming for the key/lock is stored. They brake into the car, replace the module with the factory blank and start the car old fashioned way

Now, there is that block on a diagramm?

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/e...ns-bmw-x5.html

Anyone

(You need to relocate the module or put the brace on it to prevent the theft.)

Why not just tow it?

Many euro-cars in Canada are stolen this way.

There is an article in this month's Car & Driver that discusses car theft. They mentioned that with highline cars, a common way to steal them is to replace the entire ECU and use keys/fobs mated to that ECU. As is often stated, if they really want it, they'll get it.

Thieves stole the armored S600 of Diamler Chrysler CEO worth $1 million. I am sure they had the best security system.
