Climate control has gone nuts!

And I'm going on a long roadtrip next weekend so I need to get this fixed soon! It seems that the air starts blowing faster even though the bars dont show any change (setting is not on Auto), then it stops blowing, then it blows at the feet only, and/or any combination of such. Its as though it has a mind of its own !
Can anyone help ? Am I the only one experiencing this problem?

By the way, has Chilton or Bentley come out with a repair manual for the X5 yet?

Almost forgot, its a 2001 X5 3.0

Sounds like the final stage resistor has failed. The part has been updated by BMW and it is a big problem on the E39 5-Series. Part is cheap $80 or so dollars if I remember. Easy to change on the 540 but I've not changed one on my X5 so I'm not sure of the difficulty accessing the part.

Thanks guys! I just ordered one for $67 shipped! I should have it Monday or Tuesday. Sure beats the $100 dealer diagnostic fee + $150 for the part, + $100 to install the part.

Well I ordered the part on Friday and got it Monday. It only took about 20 minutes to replace the part (thanks to the instruction on this site) but it took about 40 min to put everything back together.

One thing to note, the back of the glove box has three pars of hanging tabs which fit on a metal bar. When replacing the glove box, make sure those align first.

I had mine changed yesterday. It wasn't really acting up, I just wanted to get it out of the way while I was at the stealer. They charged me a $50.00 Deductable because of the CPO warranty. I would suggest to anyone that hasn't changed theirs, do so. All stealers know about the TSB but my tech told me that most won't say anything unless you bring it up. Honestly, you can feel the difference in the way the air is delivered into the cabin.....Phil
