Ac ?

Just wondering if something's up w/ my AC or does it usually take a while for the cold air to start filtering in ... ??? Seems to blow hot for a long time before it starts to get cool ... anyone else experience this?

How long? Even on a hot day, it doesn't take more than a min to start getting really cold air, with ours.

What's hot? Out here in the Southwest hot takes on a new meaning. (Indiana might suck but at least it's not 110+ for days on end.)

LVGirl: Mine is the same way. I get hot weather like you do so I feel your pain. I think that the X5's AC just isn't that great. My Ford Taurus has better AC that blows cool quicker. Also, my AC just got a new compressor and associated parts a couple of months ago.

Have it checked out - seems typical on older models that the a/c 'final stage' something or other burns out (Hey, I can't remember and the paperwork is out in the X under the car cover) - It was one of the first things they found when I bought my used '01 - my '06 cools fairly quickly, but I guess I'll get a chance to test it in your environment next week when I go see Reba

Actually, my X5's A/C gets cold really fast but then again, I am probably 15-20 degrees "kewler" than PNG.

First thing first....make sure your auxiliary fan is spinning or aka "pusher fan". It is not the regular fan that spins all the time behind the radiator, it is the extra fan at the front of the radiator....That aux. fan is also responsible for cooling the a/c condensor while your car is at a standstill.

If you notice that your a/c only cools down once the X5 is moving (let's say 45-50 mph continuously for about 1 mile or so), then maybe your aux/pusher fan is not working. Back in 2001-2002, there were numerous recalls on that aux. fan not working due the resistor for the aux. fan (not the resistor for climate control) shorting itself out and thus making the fan not turn on....There were even a few X5s whose aux fan resistor shorted out and started a fire.

So, when you first start your X5....turn off the a/c....and you'll see the aux fan (right behind the kidney grill) not spinning....then turn on the a/c and you should see the aux fan spinning.....sometimes it will be spin so fast, it sounds like a jet engine....It is also the same fan that you'll hear running after you turn off your X5 for a few minutes.

If that fan is not spinning when you turn on your a/c, then that needs to be fixed....otherwise, your a/c won't cool down while your X5 is at a standstill. How do I know that, because that is what happened to me and I actually had my aux. fan replaced twice as per BMW's TSB.

Of course, check all the other things such as your RF-134a levels as well....

Is the fan supposed to come on all the time when the AC is on? My wife's X5 has been having the same problem where the AC works great when the car is moving but not when stopped. I just checked and the fan did not come on even though the AC was on (I let it run for about 3 minutes, but it did not come on). However, the car has been having this problem for more than a year now (perhaps close to two years), but I am positive that I have heard the fan run after the engine has been shut off many times in the same time period that the AC problem has been going on. Is it possible for the fan to be switched on by the cooling system as an auxilary fan when needed but at the same time not work when the AC triggers it? Is the resistor only inline with the AC circuit and therefore the fan would still work for the cooling circuit?

Also, is there a way to find out which production dates and/or VIN numbers were affected with the faulty resistor (and the recall)?

It was 112 degree today and the climate control said WAZZZ up with this? So i ran the temp up to 90 and back down to 66 and it got the point.
