4.8 PINGING = Head Gasket?? - UPDATE
OFF with it's head! The heads came off, and the valves are a bit grubby, but nothing major. BUT! head gasket showed signs of a coolant leak area about 1-2 inches in area near cylinders..... Also replaced 8 ignition coils and 2 pcu's.. and so far no pinging. Will be having a more in depth discussion next week after some more driving, but only thing left according to BMW to eliminate it is to lower the compression with a double head gasket... hmmmm Replaced ECU for the suspension and a couple of control valves. Turn in to a corner is better but she still rolls like a yacht in a storm. Pretty sick of having to use my elbow on the door to keep my driving position. Next step is to put it in writing and get BMWAus involved directly. Got a bit of running around to do tomorrow so will see what turns up.

It's snow season in Australia? Unfathomable...
BMW is going to drop the compression as a last resort to fix the ping issue? I've never heard of such a fix coming from a dealer on a stock engine. I could understand dropping the compression on an engine with a aftermrket turbo installed, but on a stock normally aspirated engine? That's radical.

LVR - that sucks. I can't believe their method of repair was to reduce the engine compression for the most part. Seems like you have a ton of issues, best bet is probably to unload it.

That's pretty f*#king ridic that their solution to this problem is to lower compression by doubling headgaskets. At least you now have a determined solution to this whole mess.

Same Problem
I had the same problem with my Acura CL-S. It pinged like a mother and it was never fixed. Acura USA wouldn't take the car back, because they said that the knock sensor would retard the timing to take care of it, and I should just drive it and stop complaining. I eventually just took a loss on a 1 year old car and bought an Audi.
I had a similar pinging in my 4.8is, but fortunately, a bottle of techron has fixed my issue so far. I know how you feel, LVR, it really sucks.

This sounds like bullshit to me. they want to put a thicker head gasket to lower compresion in order to stop you pinging. but what about the loss of hp you are going to take. which easily could be 5 to 10% power loss depending on how thick they go with a new gasket. They should take the X5 back and give you a new one.

I am currently in the process of drafting the first letter to BMW.
Been back and forward for 12 months now, gone through every thing they asked. It pisses me most that I've paid $165k for a quality vehicle and that they're prepared to offer such a low rent solution. Not going to involve my solicitor yet but I guess we'll see how fair they are hey?
