Whining Transmission

I have a 2003 4.4 Sport. It's done about 47,000 miles.

If I'm driving at lower speeds (less than 30mph), there's often a very "machinery" sounding whining noise whilst accelerating. I haven't pinned down exactly when it happens (it's not permanent) but the engine is warm when it does it. It certainly doesn't sound like a pleasant V8 engine noise.

Is this one of those "usual" X5 noises, or should I be worried about something about to fail? Does anyone else have this noise?

Thanks,
Alistair

I have a 2004 4.4 with 23,000km (14,000miles) and have not experienced any whining noises so far - apart from when my wife is in the car.

Are you able to capture the sound (say) with a MP3 player then post it here?

After about 1500 mi I began hearing a high pitched whine only with acceleration at high speeds and totally throttle related. Have not had it in yet. No warning lights.
