negotiating CPO price

I have found a nice CPO 2002 X5 3.0 40k miles, sport pkg at a local dealer. They are listing it at an ok price of $26.9. I will be looking at it tomorrow and if my wife and I like it, we may make an offer. I have a feeling that they are having trouble moving X5's due to the price of gas and the new model around the corner. What would be a good starting offer? I wanted to start out at $23.5. I have a feeling that they picked it up off lease with a resid. of $19-20k.

Starting at $23.5K is right, don't start at $20K because you will probably be sounding silly for at least 1 hour before you make it to their selling price. Trust me on this. its a CPO and its has only 40K. If you start at $20K you will be talking a lot and they will be listening a lot but you never make a deal at that price. Start at $23.5K will save you some time and energy because eventually you will be buying at that range. My wife tried to save us some money when we bought our X, she did just the same thing start low. She ended up spending her time in 10 different dealerships in 10 days but at the end we bought our beloved X at $24K. So what the heck. Go for what you believe. If you think it is the right price after your inspection, sign the paper and get out of their dealership before you spend more money on other stuff. You will be spending on mods after that like most of us do anyway. GO FOR IT MAN.

$23.5 it's a good number and those are pretty low mls on an X, plus don't forget its a cpo w/warranty, maybe u should look at a 4.4, I think u might get a better deal there because people get scared when they hear 8cyl. and they are having a tougher time selling those.

A 4.4L would make a nice tow vehicle for my auto-x car, but it wouldnt be practical for the 28days of the month I am not competing. The same dealer that listed the 3.0 I am interested in has an 03 4.4L w/47k miles, but non CPO for the same price as the 3.0 CPO.

what i heard is 4.4, 4.6, 4.8 have more problems than the 3.0 version. and 3.0 are less expensive, maybe higher gas milage.

The difference on mpg between the 4.4 and the 3.0 is 1, so I went with the 4.4.....however, if I were to do a lot of driving like you do, I would've purchased a Prius.
I also drove the 3.0 and didn't notice much on the performance compared to the 4.4, then again, I only drove it locally and only for a very short time.
They are both nice vehicles, good luck.
