No, I didn't prep them at all before I sprayed. I put on about 5-6 coats and then used a clear coat also by Plasti Kote. Make sure you use proper ventilation. I almost passed out doing it down in my basement. It's been raining nonstop here recently.

As for taking out the grill and vent themselves, I used a flathead screwdriver to ease some of the clasps up a little so they would snap off. It wasn't easy and you have to be careful because everything is plastic. Just take your time....it's better to spend the extra time doing it than breaking the clasps.
