Loud Clunking noise problem??

I have a 05 4.4 and I've been having loud clunking noise everytime I make a big turn, like parking in a parking lot space where the turning almost max out. Then out of no where theres a loud clunking noise. Also I've been having the steering wheel clicking noise when I turn the steering wheel side to side and when I turn the wheel a full turn and it makes the clicking noise at the same spot. The clicking noise also can be felt, seems like it is comming from the inside only..

I brought it to dealer many times to get it fix but they said they can't find the problem. One time they told me that it is the air bag in the steering wheel that is making the clicking noise, some crap like that.. doesn't make any sense.. Anyone got these problems fixed ?? seems like its happening to the 05s out there.. Thanks!

i got the clicking noise fixed, but not the clunk.

the clicking seems to come from the conection between the steering rack and the steering wheel (i call it cardan, but i am sure there is an english term for it).

i am still clunking in parking lots, like you.

Is it the same noise when you turn your steering wheel all the way to left or right and hold it for secs while the car is in park? If it is then your steering wheel pump is working and circulating the fluid.

I would suggest you turn the steering wheel while it is in park and compare the different when you drive the car that way you can isolate the problem.

Problem could be the wheel tire rubbing, cv joint, or the frame is not straight if the car had accident before

I got the same problem too. I get a loud clunk occasionally when i make a u turn or coming out of the garage in reverse. Mine seems to be coming from the driver's side. I brought it in to the stealer but they still couldn't find the problem.

I had the same exact problem on my 2004 x5. It was the ball joints. They were actually manufactured a bit too small to fit where ever its bolted to. so that causes it to move around. they replaced both of mine after like my 10th visit to the dealer for the problem and it finally went away.

Thanks, What did you tell the people at the dealer when you brought you car in to get it fixed? Did you went for a test drive with the shop forman?

Yea i had to go for a test drive with the foreman a few times actually because the damn thing would only do it when i was driving by myself. but eventually he heard it too. Then after that it went in like 10 times each time changing different suspension and steering parts. Nothing helped it until the last time it was there and they changed the balljoints and the clunk went away completely.

Could be wheel bearings

I had this fixed about a year ago - there was some sort of tech document about it. IIRC it was front wheel bearings slightly popping out of their place - they reinstalled these and used locktite to keep it from happening again - it hasn't. As I said, there was some sort of tech document about it - it was a known issue
