I've been able to take every Mustang I've raced since supercharging... that's not to say its invincible though. I had one occasion where I ran a cobra... shut down at about 145... beat him by about 30 feet overall. At the next stoplight I could hear his girlfriend in the passenger seat say to him "I thought you said this car was fast...? you just got beat by a van!!!".

For some reason, people don't think BMWs are supposed to go fast... that even applies to some BMW owners! (nb. the rest of my races are subject to my wifes M5. Its a hotrod too with loads of goodies. Its a pretty even race between my X5 and her M5 until we get to about 150 or so.... then it all over as she leaves me in the dust).

Anyway... YES I have thought about nitrous... the wet systems are about all you can use, because the injection systems will create too much HP for the motor. Its only good to about 600-650 HP peak. I'll mess with that once I get all the HP out of the hardware I can.

Most people don't know this, but the diffs are made by Dana for BMW... and for those who have raced... know that they build almost indestructible parts. They are surely not the weak link. The stock gears are 3.91's. The only lower gearing available from any source is a 4.10 without completely replacing the carrier and housing. The transmission is a pretty stout unit too. I don't know what the limits are, but no failures yet.

I've yet to break anything in the drive line, so I must not have enough HP yet?

Sanguru your saying that those companies dont make headers for the X5 but i think he already said that. thats why he is asking the board if anyone knows who does make headers for the X5. Not sure what you mean by the 30ft statement either. Can you please clarify. thanks

he said he beat the mustang by 30 ft.. We've seen supercharged 4.6is at both sac raceway and sears (Dinan S3 and ESS) run only high 13's. high 13's well.. you get the idea.. slooooow.

I got it. He could beat a stock cobra though it would be close. But not a heavily modded one. Like i always say the X5 weights 5000lbs so with 500hp at best it will be as fast as a stock E39 M5. Which is fast but not a rocket.

"I had one occasion where I ran a cobra... shut down at about 145... beat him by about 30 feet overall."

It seems SANguru questions the veracity of being able to beat a Cobra by 3 car lengths.

Warbucks.. I can appreciate your Need For Speed but I don't think the way to introduce yourself to a forum is to dis it. It's true this board is more geared to pimping ones X rather than what 1/4 mile times you can click off. But in all deference the X5, even the 4.6is, is more about stylin and profilelin than true performance.

as far as I know, none of the Dinan S3 X5's are getting any where close to 500 hp unless they got resized pullies and software of which dinan will have a fit if they find out. They should all be running around 6lbs of boost. Stock E39 M5's run low 13's so no. remember, drivetrain loss is much higher with AWD and the slushbox even with software saps quite a bit of power not to mention in the qtr mile, there is an extra shift due to the gearing so even if he swapped diffs he will still not be into the 12's... so no.. sloooow.. 390hp cobras are running low 13's.

right you are. If he did smoke a cobra on the street which if he says he did i give him the benifit of the dought it was because the kid driving couldnt get the power to just 2 rear wheels when taking off while on the other hand in the X5 you just mash the throttle and you could a good run because it is auto and awd

not to mention the aerodynamic advantage of anything above 120 the big ass frontal area of the X5 and the amount of lift generated at those speeds vs a sleeker lower mustang. so I'm calling BS..

Wake-up call...

Here is a wake-up call for wanna-be racers. From my experience, the typical driver tries to leave the stoplight in a race under full power, with the tires spinning in a cloud of smoke. ON THE OTHER HAND, at full power the X5 AWD will turn the tires over maybe once before all the power is solidly put to the pavement (because of the vanos system and the fact that the SC really only works above 3000RPM). In some 40 years of racing, I can only remember maybe a total of three times when the opposition didn't break the tires loose and waste HP (on the street...not at the track).

While we have to be realistic in understanding that a 4,800 pound vehicle with a 500 HP motor has its limitations... you still must consider that the average street racer has little understanding of how a race is won.

ps. the BMW guys...just like the mustang guys...have figured out how to change the pulleys on the Superchargers/ use and improve the intercooling to get things cooking.
