No, it isn't a regular maintenance item. Unless you know you had a load of bad fuel, or have had problems with this particular filter on this car in the past, I would leave it alone.

Items like fuel filters used to be part of a tuneup (along with points, capacitors, distributor caps, etc). When the federal emissions regulations started mandating that the vehicle had to meet the original emissions spec, without owner intervention, for an extended period (100,000 km, for example) then the manufacturers had to design items like fuel filters, which if clogged could change the tailpipe emissions readings, to make them long life.

I would change a fuel filter if there was a fault relating to low fuel pressure, or another symptom of restricted fuel flow. I would also plan on doing it at a major service around 100,000 miles, but not before that.

Just my $0.02

Jeff

Really? That's very odd since regulations requires that California gas station have an in-line filter at their pumps. That's why a lot of manufacturers went away with fuel filter replacements on their maintenance list. Even when everything is said and done, I still would replace the fuel filters on all my cars at about 100K miles...just to play it safe.

according to the service schedule its a 100k mile interval. it's a large size filter but then the V8 drink lots of gas.

I changed mine at 50k. it's an expensive one since the pressure regulator is intergrated. it's also a PITA to get to. the under panels in front of the left rear wheel has to be removed.

The real question is, did it clog due to an accumulation of debris over the 60K miles, or were there one or more tanks of dirty fuel (in which case it could happen at any time). Pretty hard to tell, in hindsight, unless you got a tank at a station you never use, and it happened right after that.

In any case, if it made it 60K it doesn't owe you much
