Cost of ownership question - 4.4

Hello All - not an X5 owner yet, but strongly considering one over a newer replacement version of my current Land Cruiser.

As a former M3 and 540i-6 owner (among other bimmers), I am fairly familiar with the cost of owning and maintaining a BMW in its mid-life. I have also spent hours reading at this terrific site. I am considering 03 and 04 E53s, and know about the gas mileage.

Questions - why do Roundel, magazines and posts here say that the v8s are more expensive to own/maintain? What is it about the drivetrain that is more costly than the inline 6?

Lastly, seems an extended warranty is a requirement for this vehicle given the number of smaller but costly items needing attention in years 2-6 (regulators, radiator, water pumps, trim pieces, etc).

Can anyone estimate their cost per year of ownership (whether you pay it or BMW does under warranty(s) - both maintenance and more importantly repair? Didn't see this in the FAQs but it would help myself and others ( I have seen Edmunds' estimate)

I am fond of the famous BMW road feel, especially in an SAV - but I need my daily driver to be reasonably reliable and economical if I am to make the leap from Toyota trucks
