Thumbs down NO GO - $80.00 Custom CAI for the X5?

AEM Filter used on E39 M5 will not fit the stock airbox on the '04 4.4 X5... Sorry...

Here's what you'll need:
(1) AEM Dryflow air filters

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...=115&y=11&x=25

(1) Aluminum intake mandrel bent pipes
http://www.sfxperformance.com/catalo...ctCode=VIB2880

(1) Roll of Aluminum foil High-temp tape

Here is a quick installation summary (pictures shown are of E39 M5 installation):

1. Remove top portion of OEM airbox

2. Remove the air intake guide that's snapped on

3. Cut the bent 15" pipe by 6.5" at both ends.

4. Apply Aluminum foil tape on one end of the bent pipe and test fit along the way... Continue until it fits tightly enough...

5. Connect the AEM filter to the end of the pipe.

6. Verify that the airbox lid closes well without any extra force...

This custom CAI on the M5 will give you a gain of 12HP as per Dyno...
Dyno Results

Thanks Kevin, I'll try it on the X5 tomorrow. I'm sure it'll fit since the X5 and the M5 uses the same engine air filter.

Thanks for the writeup. That's good stuff.

I assume that it's $160 for your M5 since you have dual intakes ($80 per side)?

If I'm not mistaken, the left airbox on the E39 M5 is about the same spec as the airbox on the E39 540i which is the equivalent to the X5 4.4i. I should be able to take your DIY and run with it.

I have a couple of questions.

What was the part # for the filter?

What's the size of the aluminum tubing? I have some old 2.75" tubing in the garage from an old Toyota CAI unit already bent at 45". Since you cut off 13" from the 15" tubing, am I right in stating what remained was 2" at the apex?

The aluminum tape is used to ask as a gasket between the aluminum tubing and the intake housing? Are you trying to seal the box? I see where you have it wrapped around the tubing until "it fits tightly enough..."

What's great about this mod, it's quick, easy, cheap, and it appears to be easily reversible. It probably would yield less than 12HP on a 4.4i as compared to your M5, but I'd be happy to get 8 or so HP from my 4.4i from what is apparently a very inexpensive mod.

Thanks, TQ2K!

hahahaha... yeah, just shows you how happy and excited I am with this cheap mod! But not as excited compared to my 5hp gain with an air freshener (back in the good 'ol days)...

- $150.00 for the M5 since I just rounded off the cost for the X5.

- It's 2.75" x 15 and yes only 2" at the apex remained.

- Yes, used the aluminum foil tape as a gasket to tightly fit the tubing in the top airbox air channel.
