Hands down, pun not intended, the BMW M Sport steering wheel from the M3/M5/Performance Package/ E39 M Sport is the best.

What steering wheel do you have now? You'll need the round airbag to do the easy swap to one of those wheels.

I have the M-sport steering wheel, same as pic shown below. Its much thicker than sport wheel and has nicer nappa leather. But not sure if it will fit your 4.6.
But if you want the nicest then go with bi-Color (not just the stitching) steering wheel w/SMG paddle meant for the "Individua M3". part # 32-34-8-022-324. Triple X5 did on his 4.8is, I have the pics somewhere, looks really nice but is tricky to install.

Wow...I didn't realize I had the M steering wheel in my X5. Mine came with the steering wheel in that picture, except for having no "M" logo on the bottom, but it is exactly the same.

Here's mine....same, but just no "M" logo:

Edit: now that I look, there are slight differences, but very still very similar.

Not same, I had that one. The one you have has plastic feel to it. And leather is also cheap and the wheel is less thick. The thumb support is better on M-sport wheel.

M-Sport wheel Part # 32303415380

Agreed the wheel in my 2003 M3 was the nicest I've seen in a BMW.
